Statement
Oil painting is an experiential activity that has a direct
connection with what the painter sees and what is chosen to be documented.
Throughout the years Betina Fink has been most compelled to reinvent
images painted, and to revisit spaces and experiences that have infused
her thoughts and memories. The act of documenting is her way of filtering
and interpreting the world.
Experiential painting means that every time Betina Fink faces the canvas,
she reacts to what is in front of her: the living, breathing, changing
space. Experiencing the making and changing of a painting becomes a
compelling and evolving relationship. What becomes interesting is the
growing body of work that shows a cycle of reinterpreted ideas.
Background Summary
Betina Fink received her BA in Art History and Fine Art from the University
of Delaware in 1983. After working for two years at the Philadelphia
Museum of Art, she entered the MFA program in painting at the University
of Arizona in Tucson, graduating in 1988. Not too long after graduation
Betina moved to the Netherlands, where she lived in Amsterdam and Rotterdam
during the 1980s and 90s. There she studied paintings
by the Northern European Masters. Returning in 1995 to Arizona brought
a change of iconography continuing to be present in Finks work.
The painting became inspired by subject matter found in the southwestern
part of the United States: Spanish-Colonial architectural elements,
botanical forms, and the sharp contrast of light and color.
Finks work has been exhibited in Europe and the United States.
She has received several grants from the Dutch government, and is in
collections both in the Netherlands and the U.S. She has been affiliated
with arts communities/cooperatives such as International Arts Collective
(Barcelona/Netherlands), Rancho Linda Vista (Oracle, AZ), Dinnerware
Gallery (Tucson, AZ) and The Drawing Studio (Tucson, AZ).
